Poppies

Poppies

Red poppies are so spectacular. and have long been used as a symbol of sleep, peace, and death.

Sleep because the opium extracted from them is a sedative, and death because of the common blood-red colour . Following the trench warfare in the poppy fields of Flanders, Belgium during World War I, poppies have become a symbol of remembrance of soldiers who have died during wartime.

“In Flanders Fields” is a war poem and its references to the red poppies that grew over the graves of fallen soldiers resulted in the remembrance poppy becoming one of the world’s most recognized memorial symbols for soldiers who have died in conflict.

En masse these large scarlet flowers swaying in the breeze were a sight to behold.
